Yesterday an auction ended on bringatrailer.com that involved a very unique old car, a 1972 Mercury Comet. A couple years ago I sold a 1974 Mercury Comet, 4 door, 302 V8 engine, LDO (Luxury Dealer Option) package. It was a cool old car that was very similar to my parents’ first new car, which was the sister car to the Comet, a 1972 Ford Maverick. I bought it half to just show my parents and give them a little blast from the past. The one that passed through BaT yesterday was Glamour Gold in color, with a white vinyl top, the LDO luxury package and the V8, very similar spec to the one I had. I watched the auction and it was going fairly cheaply the night before. After a little teasing I kinda almost got permission from the Minister of Finance to buy it, even after buying a 1989 Honda Prelude just days before! The Car Disease is running rampant! Fast forward to the day of and the bidding had jumped to well beyond what I might have been able to get away with buying it for. Oh well, I had one and sold it so I was kinda “been there done that…..but that Glamour Gold color!” It ended up going to $8,100 and then out of nowhere comes a BaT veteran with a knockout $10,000 bid and that was that. The guy was a CEO of a large company and had won EIGHTY FIVE auctions in his BaT history. I just cannot compete with millionaires
